SCOTTISH FOOD AND DRINK FORTNIGHT 2012

Hurrah, it’s here – the two weeks of 2012 where we can all eat and drink as much as we bloomin well want to and celebrate the fantastic seasonal produce that we have here on our doorsteps in bonnie Scotland.

The Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight encourages everyone to eat Scottish, to source and champion scottish produce, support local producers and farmers and to build Scotland’s reputation for excellent quality food and drink.

Tough challenge? Not really…well, it shouldn’t be. Many of us don’t realise how readily available Scottish produce is. Each month there are over 20 seasonal scottish products that we could put in our shopping basket if we shop in the right places.  At Monkfish Towers we support our local farmer’s markets and stores such as Earthy Foods in Edinburgh because we know we are buying the best possible produce and are supporting our local farmers at the same time. In return we are blessed with some of the tastiest foods known to humanity and we sleep better for that (depending on how many wee drams we’ve had the night before….).

We don’t eat Scottish Monkfish that often (crazy all things considered….!)….but we do chomp on Scottish fruit and veg most days, treat ourselves to an Arbroath Smokie at the weekend and we do enjoy the odd tipple or two of locally produced whisky and beer. Why not, life’s too short!  And that being the case maybe in the next two weeks you can have a think about where your food is coming from and how a little support from you, Joe Public, and us, Mr and Mrs Monkfish would enable our local Scottish farmers and producers to continue their hard work which puts the very best on our plates and in our glasses. Sláinte!
