We like a first at Monkfish Towers particularly if it’s the sort of ‘first’ that is better than any first that has gone before it….and that’s something! So, when we heard about Brew Lab, “a new kind of coffee shop…exploring the possibilities of coffee and what a coffee shop should be – melding traditional and innovative brewing techniques and local artisan produce to create a new coffee shop experience” we were uber excited to get there FIRST.
With a constant eye on the twittersphere word up was that opening day was yesterday….a quick scramble around the Towers and we were on our way to South College Street to check out the new kid on the block.
Two flat whites on order we checked out the new surroundings. With a keen eye for cool interiors the Brew Lab fit out is right up our street. It has an East London feel about it, yep, we could well have been sat one of our all time faves ‘Allpress’ in Shoreditch but hurrah, no train journey required, Brew Lab is right on our doorstep.
Radiators have been sourced from Holyrood Architectural Salvage yard, the floor is the old gym floor from a school just outside Falkirk and the Brew Lab bar is formed from concrete made into a solid block. With light fittings from an old ship to complete the look this place is definitely one for all interiors fans, we love it.
For a pictorial review of the coffee shop fit out then check out the Brew Lab BLOG.
We can happily report that the flat whites were up there with the best of them and definitely on a par with our current hit list – Wellington Coffee, Lovecrumbs, Project Coffee, Artisan Roast, Freemans, Printworks and Peter’s Yard. And fear not, there’s cakes on offer too and although we didn’t indulge yesterday Ms Monkfish promises a return visit pronto so will report back on that one.
