MISSING IN ACTION….

That’s me, yes, missing from blog action, gone AWOL, busted a move etc etc  Sorry!  I can update you on what has been happening since we last spoke and then I’ll get my blogging act together and report back in detail shortly.  Me and Mr Predictable have been:-

a)  living it up in gay Paree – whoop whoop, gastronomique delights, Mama Shelter review to follow

b) living it up in London village – whoop whoop, burgers at The Luxe (thank you Mr Torode), afternoon tea at the Albion Cafe (thank you Mr Conran), the dining queue at Polpo (boo, queue too long, had to leave heads hanging low, gutted), lunch at LEON (yay, our fave)

c) living it up in our beautiful city of Edinburgh – The Dogs (AGAIN!), our all time fave The Basement (numerous times) and more recently dinner at Roseleaf, top $.

d) and more importantly I’ve been living it up in my lovely kitchen big time. Baking, stewing, roasting, poaching, pickling. Heaven.

Catch you soon with the photos, then you’ll see how busy I’ve really been :) x

London…food fest…done….

Well, what a weekend I had in London, it was just like Treasure Hunt with Anneka Rice but I decided against the red jumpsuit on this occasion.  Reason for the comparison is that I managed to squeeze in lunch at ‘LEON’,  a take-away cake from ‘Ottolenghi’,  an outside view of ‘Sketch’ (I did intend to get inside but they were having none of it! see posts below….), tea and cake at ‘Liberty’s', cocktails at the ‘Light Bar’ at St Martin’s Lane Hotel, mojitos, margharitis and street food at ‘Wahaca’, tea at ‘Peyton and Byrne’….phew, I think that’s it…there was a take-out from M&S for the journey home but hey, hardly up there with the other offerings we sampled!

So, my second visit of the year to LEON, tremendous…sweet potato falafel flatbread for me and spicy chicken flatbread for Mr Predictable (ooh, convinced he would go for the meatballs)…yum, a good start to the weekend and a visit to the first original Leon to open in London just near Carnaby Street.

lovely lovely LEON

Leon…done.  Sent Mr Predictable on his way while I went off to meet the girls and the Sketch debacle commenced, not much more to say there. Onwards and upwards we headed to the cafe at Liberty’s and after a short wait we were safely in our seats perusing the cake options. After getting over the shock of a cupcake costing £3.75 (I know!) we settled in for an hour of tea, cake, and gossip, lovely, just what us girls need.

This was the cupcake that my friend ‘Coffee-mate Kate’ got her chops round..

And this is ‘Coffee-mate Kate’ in action….

Coffee-mate Kate in full cupcake chomp!

And here’s me with my carrot cake…or I should say carat cake..it cost £5.50!

Liberty carrot cake and me!

And finally the three of us in cake heaven…

Happiness!

After a spot of window shopping we headed to the Light Bar at the St Martin’s Lane Hotel for some cocktails, a snip at £13 each! Still, they were lovely, Vanilla and Rhubarb Martini for me, yum yum yum. Ultra cool interior and a real place to be seen in….have since found out it’s open to members and hotel guests only so the girls did do well!

After a few more pre-dinner aperitifs at slightly cheaper establishments in Covent Garden we headed to Wahaca for dinner. Mr Predictable was once again in tow but he behaved himself and ordered what I thought he would. ha ha…already had one shock at lunchtime so I couldn’t have taken any more! Wahaca was set up by Thomasina Miers who won Masterchef in 2005. It’s a mexican restaurant but refreshingly different from most mexican’s I have been to. Wahaca specialises in ‘street food’ which is basically small dishes like tapas that you can share with your fellow diners.

And that was Saturday…phew…

Sunday, woke up feeling surprisingly refreshed considering the number of mojitos consumed! Two treasure hunt items on the foodie agenda today, Ottolenghi and Peyton and Byrne, both successfully ticked off, hurrah.

First tick in the box was Ottolenghi in Islington…the queue was out the door unfortunately (are you seeing a theme developing bloggers?!) so we opted for a ‘take-out’, in other words the best cake they had in a lovely little box to be consumed out with the premises. Not a problem for a professional cake eater such as myself..I will eat cake… anywhere….job very well done..

more cakes!

Ottolenghi in Islington

What a top weekend it had been, just Peyton and Byrne to visit and we were done…had walked miles but that meant all the cake had been burnt off so I was happy in my foodie pursuits!

Ended up at Peyton and Byrne in St Pancras at the end of the day absolutely exhausted but still delighted to see the lovely font adorning their packaging…geeky but true….a nice gill sans!  Could only manage a cuppa, their pies are worth mentioning but even Mr Predictable couldn’t manage one, he was full to bursting and so was I! Maybe next time.

what a lovely font!

London….food fest….DONE 8)

Sunday night with leon, again…

A whole afternoon of cooking….bliss….trusty leon at my side and venturing into the veggie pages I rustled up a couple of classics tonight. First off a twist on falafel, a sweet potato version, absolutely delish served up with homegrown rocket from our garden, wow, impressive or what? Managed to make about 16 falafels from one sweet potato, we are economising gastronomising tonite bloggers!

Main course tonite was leon gobi – cauli, carrot, new potatoes in a fabulous coconut, almond spicy sauce…all the faves were in there, chilli, ginger, garlic, turmeric, garam masala, yum! Enough for the next two nights to boot, happy days….Allegra Mcevedy is my food hero of the year.

I was hoping to venture into cake territory today too but the cupcake tasting from Wednesday has kept me going in that department! Hardly a sweet thing has passed my lips since then! Will make up for that next weekend for sure…..

and that’s the weekend over….

The weekend has flown by and the foodie endeavours have not been too bad……the plan for the hot pork sarnie for mr predictable did not come to fruition as the edinburgh farmers market was not the fully fledged version we are used to due to force ten gales blowing around castle terrace. There were a token few suppliers selling stuff from their vans but unfortunately that was the extent of the market on saturday…never mind, it was made up for by a perfect crepe from Broughton Deli. Another place that I champion and visit frequently…it’s a big hit with me, cool atmos if you sit in at the back and the food is obviously top notch and local hence the nod here…i’m sure it will be mentioned again soon!

What’s more important to mention today is the sunday evening success in my kitchen! Moroccan meatballs from Leon (page 217), extremely easy to make and a taste sensation….CHECK OUT THE RESULTS!  JUST LIKE THE PICTURE!  Minced lamb, wholemeal flatbreads (soaked in milk, helps to bind the ‘balls’ together), mint, oregano, parsley, garlic….then the sauce, garlic, chopped toms, harissa, basil and parsley.

Interesting fact number one foodie fans – unfortunately I was unable to locate Harissa on my sunday afternoon supermarket trip…there’s always one ingredient you can’t get, extremely annoying when you have a specific recipe in mind and it seems to happen ALL the time…no matter as within the depths of my pantry I found all the necessary moroccan spices to create my own mix and I’m sure it tasted better for being made from scratch.

The chief taster put his thumbs up and downed about 10 of said meatballs so I’d say it was a hit…. Yet another success from Leon… and to go with it ‘Happy Carrot’ (page 207), a delightful mix of sultanas, grated carrot, garlic, toasted seeds, coriander, mint, chilli, lemon juice and olive oil….mouth watering stuff and another picture result! ok, i know that a salad isn’t that difficult but for it to look like the picture?! I was happy!

I know what you’re thinking, I was supposed to venture into Ottolenghi territory…plenty of time for that next weekend.

Weekend…DONE…..what no cake, that would be telling.

Magic mackerel

Anyone been watching economy gastronomy? This magic mackerel is from ‘leon’, a super cool book from eg’s very own allegra mcevedy….unfortunately i only get to go to LEON when i’m in london but this book can bring their delights into your own home. Magic mackerel looked EXACTLY like the picture from the book, i was so chuffed….super-food packed with essential oils and even gives you extra brain power….win win!  I made this ages ago but as I have just started my monkfish blog i need to get all the past successes on here ASAP!  Check the link to LEON and treat yourself to a visit, you won’t be disappointed.
